Skills impact of failing to close this gap. If we do not act, we risk not only lost jobs, but stalled projects, delayed growth, and the weakening of multiple sectors.
A call to inspire the next generation
This isn’ t just about filling positions. It’ s about inspiring a new generation to see the trades as a viable, rewarding, and lucrative career path. Today’ s young people are looking for meaningful work, financial stability, and opportunities for advancement. The trades offer all of that and more- without the crushing burden of student debt.
Educators, policymakers, industry leaders, and communities all have a role to play. We must tell the story of the trades in a way that resonates with parents and students, create accessible pathways into apprenticeships and vocational programs, and provide clear opportunities for advancement.
Looking ahead
The need is urgent, but the opportunity is immense. If we invest in building a robust pipeline of skilled tradespeople today, we will not only address the immediate retirement crisis but also strengthen the foundation of our economy for decades to come.
The clock is ticking, and the time to act is now. The question is not whether we can afford to address the trades gap- it’ s whether we can afford not to. ■
