The home sauna is having a moment. Here’ s what luxury builders need to know. By Earl Dauley

Not long ago, a home sauna was a luxury reserved for ski chalets and high-end spa retreats. Today, it’ s one of the most requested wellness features in custom residential builds. The shift is real, it’ s accelerating, and for builders who want to stay ahead of their clients’ expectations, it’ s worth understanding in some depth.

A market that has grown up
The home sauna market has matured significantly over the past decade. Consumer awareness of heat therapy’ s benefits, driven by prominent media voices and peerreviewed research on cardiovascular health, muscle recovery, and stress reduction, has expanded the buyer pool well beyond dedicated athletes and wellness enthusiasts. We are now firmly in mainstream adoption territory, with buyers treating a home sauna as a baseline expectation in a premium build rather than an add-on.
That said, not all this growth has been healthy. The wellness industry broadly, and the sauna and cold plunge category specifically, has attracted a wave of brands built to capitalize on a trend rather than to serve buyers well over time. Builders and their clients should be aware that the space contains a wide spectrum of quality. The best home saunas are thoughtfully engineered products backed by genuine customer support. Others look compelling in an online ad but disappoint in practice.
