For more than two decades, Vellum Design Build has offered Central Coast homeowners a more thoughtful approach: one experienced team guiding the project from the earliest ideas through design, permitting, construction, interior selections, and final completion.

Founded in San Luis Obispo in 2003 by Paul Abbott, Vellum has grown from a small downtown storefront into one of the region’ s most established integrated design-build firms. The company has completed more than 100 residential projects throughout the Central Coast, ranging from custom homes on rural acreage and sophisticated coastal remodels to luxury residences and thoughtfully planned communities.

At the heart of the company is a simple philosophy: good design and good construction should never be separated.“ Many homeowners begin with a beautiful design, only to discover later that it does not align with their budget, property conditions, or construction realities,” Abbott says.“ Our process brings those conversations together from the beginning. We are studying design, cost, constructability, permitting, materials, and long-term performance at the same time.”

Experience from the ground up

Abbott’ s understanding of construction began long before Vellum was founded. He grew up working in the trades alongside his father, a contractor in Palm Springs. After gaining years of hands-on field experience, Abbott attended community college and later studied architecture at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Following graduation, he joined Charles Pankow Builders, where he worked on large-scale high-rise projects throughout major West Coast markets. The company self-performed complex concrete and precast construction on buildings reaching approximately 50 stories- an experience that exposed Abbott to sophisticated project management, demanding schedules, technical coordination, and an exceptionally high standard of execution.

That combination of practical field knowledge, architectural education, and large-project discipline continues to shape Vellum today.“ We understand how a home is conceived, how it is engineered, how it is priced, and how it is actually assembled in the field,” Abbott explains.“ That allows us to protect the design while also protecting the client’ s investment.”
